# Family Things to Do Near New Braunfels: A Mom's Honest 1-Day Itinerary

May 7, 2026 11 min read

If you've ever tried to plan a family day in New Braunfels in July, you already know the secret: the closer you are to downtown, the louder, hotter, and more expensive the day gets. After a decade of hauling our own kids — plus three nieces, a nephew, and one extremely opinionated mother-in-law — through every **family thing to do near New Braunfels**, we've narrowed it down to the handful that actually deliver: shaded, calm-water, kid-tested, parent-approved.

This is the itinerary I send to friends visiting from out of town. No Schlitterbahn lines, no glittery foam tubes, no $14 chicken tenders. Just a real Hill Country day with kids who sleep all the way home.

## Why "Family Things to Do Near New Braunfels" Usually Gets It Wrong

Type that phrase into Google and you'll get the same six listings every time: Schlitterbahn, Animal World, Natural Bridge Caverns, Gruene, Landa Park, and the river. They're not bad — they're just famous. And when something's famous in New Braunfels, it means lines, crowds, and roughly $42 in parking before lunch.

Our family lives 20 minutes from downtown. We learned the hard way that the best _family things to do near New Braunfels_ aren't actually _in_ New Braunfels. They're a quick drive east into Seguin and Kingsbury, where the same spring-fed Guadalupe water runs cleaner, the cabanas are private, and a Saturday feels less like a theme park and more like a vacation.

The properties in this guide are run by the Son's Island Getaways, LLC. family — five Hill Country water spots within 25 minutes of New Braunfels. Day passes, cabanas, glamping, kayaks, paddle boards. Same vibe, different rivers, all kid-friendly. Start with our [things to do in New Braunfels pillar guide](/things-to-do-new-braunfels) if you want the full overview, or stick with this itinerary for the family-with-kids version.

## The 1-Day Itinerary (Tested With Three Kids Under 10)

This is the plan we run with weekend visitors. It assumes a 9am start, two parents, kids ages 3–12, and an unwavering commitment to being home by bath time.

### 9:00 AM — Coffee in Gruene, then point the car east

Start with a short walk through Gruene Historic District (15 minutes from your hotel) for coffee, kolaches, or a quick stop at the Gruene General Store. It's the one "famous" New Braunfels stop we still recommend because it's free, shaded, and you can be in and out in 30 minutes. Then load the cooler and drive 20 minutes east to Seguin.

### 10:00 AM — Check in at your private cabana

Pull onto [Son's Island](/book-now) and park near the bridge. The whole property is a 3.5-acre private island in the middle of Lake Placid, which is itself a calm, dam-fed stretch of the Guadalupe River. Cabana check-in is a one-page form, the cabana itself is shaded, and the kids will be in the water before you've finished unpacking the cooler.

Each cabana is its own little base camp: picnic table, BBQ grill, fan, hammock, hose for rinsing sandy feet. Free kayaks, paddle boards, and life jackets are right at the dock. No reservation required for any of the activities — it's all included with the cabana.

### 11:30 AM — Kayak the lagoon

The lagoon side of Son's Island is the calmest, clearest, most beginner-friendly water you'll find within an hour of New Braunfels. Even our 4-year-old paddles a tandem kayak with her mom and feels like she's discovered a new continent. For more on this exact spot and what makes it click for families, see our full [kayaking near San Antonio guide](/kayaking-near-san-antonio).

### 12:30 PM — Picnic, BBQ, or a real lunch

Most families bring a cooler. Dad fires up the grill, kids eat hot dogs, mom finally sits down. If grilling sounds like work, food trucks pull up to the island on weekends and there's a snack hut for ice cream emergencies.

## Why Son's Island Beats Crowded New Braunfels Spots for Families

I'm going to be specific here, because "private island" sounds like marketing fluff until you've seen it. Here's what's actually different from the other family things to do near New Braunfels:

- **The water is calm.** The Comal and the Guadalupe through downtown New Braunfels are great for tubing, terrible for toddlers. Lake Placid is dam-flat — kids stand up in waist-deep water and stay there.
- **You have a base.** When you're tubing the river, you carry everything. At a cabana, you set everything down and forget about it.
- **Shade is built in.** The cabanas are roofed and the island has mature pecans and cypress everywhere.
- **Free activities are actually free.** Kayaks, paddle boards, life jackets, beach volleyball, cornhole, hammocks — included.
- **It's smaller than you think.** Parents can see kids from anywhere. We've never lost track of one — the island is small and the bridge is the only way off.

If you want the full breakdown of what's on the island, the [cabana rental page](/cabanas) walks through every amenity, and the [interactive island map](/island-map) shows where everything sits.

## Family Things to Do Near New Braunfels — Beyond Son's Island

One day, one cabana, one happy family is the easy version. But there's a whole network of sister properties within 25 minutes that gives you variety on a longer visit.

### Sons Rio Cibolo (20 min south of New Braunfels)

[Sons Rio Cibolo](/book-now/rio-cibolo) sits on Cibolo Creek and feels like a mini Hill Country state park. The big draw for kids is the small waterfall and rope swing area, plus shallow swim pools that are perfect for the under-6 crowd. There's a pool, palapas, hammocks, and a pavilion area for big family groups. Read the dedicated [cabana rentals near New Braunfels](/cabana-rentals-new-braunfels) page for booking specifics.

### Son's River Ranch (25 min east in Kingsbury)

[Son's River Ranch](/book-now/river-ranch) is the spot for families who want to add tubing to the day. The San Marcos River runs cool, clear, and gentle right through the property — it's the kind of mile-and-a-half float that ends with kids asking to do it again. There's also [glamping cabins](/glamping-near-san-antonio) if you want to make a weekend of it.

### Sons Geronimo (15 min east)

[Sons Geronimo](/book-now/geronimo) shares Lake Placid with Son's Island but offers full cabin rentals — kitchens, beds, A/C — for families who want overnight without the camping commitment. It's the closest "drive-up cabin" experience you'll find to New Braunfels.

### Sons Guadalupe (20 min north)

[Sons Guadalupe](/book-now/sons-guadalupe) puts you right on the iconic Guadalupe River with private cabin access. Tubing, swimming, fishing — older kids love it.

## What to Pack for a Family Day Near New Braunfels

After 100+ family days at our properties, here's the packing list that hasn't changed in five years:

1. **Two swimsuits per kid.** One always gets wet before you leave the house. Trust me.
2. **Rashguards or UV shirts.** Spring-fed water reflects more sun than people realize.
3. **Reef-safe sunscreen.** Better for the rivers, better for kid skin.
4. **Water shoes.** Optional on docks, mandatory if you're walking creek beds at Rio Cibolo.
5. **A real cooler.** Soft-sided ones leak by 2pm. Bring the hard one.
6. **Snacks. So many snacks.** The river makes children inexplicably hungry every 22 minutes.
7. **A change of clothes for the drive home.** Wet kids on leather seats is not a vibe.
8. **Bug spray for after 5pm.** Hill Country mosquitoes know when you're tired.

Cabana rentals provide BBQ grills, charcoal-friendly setups, picnic tables, fans, hammocks, and life jackets. You really only bring food, drinks, and personal items.

## Best Time to Visit With Kids

This question gets asked every week, so here's the honest breakdown:

### Spring (March – May)

Wildflowers, cooler river water, smaller crowds. Easter weekends fill up early but mid-week is wide open. This is our personal favorite season for families with younger kids.

### Summer (June – August)

Peak season, peak warmth, peak booking demand. Weekends sell out 4–6 weeks in advance. Weekdays still have great availability and are noticeably cheaper.

### Fall (September – October)

The hidden gem. Water is still warm, crowds are gone, school is back so weekday rates drop. We do a lot of "just-us" family days in October.

### Winter (November – February)

Glamping season. Water activities slow down but campfire weekends are some of our favorite memories. [Glamping near San Antonio](/blog/glamping-near-san-antonio) covers winter trips in detail.

## How Family Days Near New Braunfels Compare on Cost

Without naming names, a family of four at the obvious New Braunfels water park will spend $200+ on tickets alone, plus $20 parking, plus $80 for an underwhelming lunch. We've all done it.

A weekday cabana at Son's Island runs a fraction of that, includes everything mentioned above, and saves you the food markup because you bring your own. Weekend pricing is higher but still beats theme-park economics for a family of four. Live availability and exact rates are on the [Son's Island booking page](/book-now).

## Common Mistakes (and How to Skip Them)

Quick list of things we see families get wrong:

- **Booking too late.** Saturdays sell out 30+ days ahead in summer. Book the second you know your dates.
- **Bringing glass.** Not allowed near the water. Cans only.
- **Underestimating sun.** Even on the river, reapply every two hours.
- **Skipping the kayak.** It's free, it's right there, and it's the part the kids talk about for weeks.
- **Not stopping at Pape's Pecan House on the way home.** A Seguin tradition. The kids will thank you.

## Make It a Weekend (Without Going Back to a Hotel)

If a single day isn't enough — and with kids it usually isn't — turn it into an overnight at one of our glamping cabins or full cabins. [Sons Island overnight](/book-now), [Rio Cibolo overnight](/book-now/rio-cibolo-overnight), and [River Ranch overnight](/book-now/river-ranch-overnight) all sleep families of 4–6 with real beds, A/C, and kitchens. Read our weekend itinerary post: [Family Getaways Near San Antonio: The Friday-to-Sunday Plan](/blog/family-getaways-near-san-antonio-weekend).

## The Bottom Line

The best _family thing to do near New Braunfels_ isn't the obvious one. It's the 15-minute drive east, the private cabana, the kids who tire themselves out on free kayaks, and the parents who actually get to read a chapter of a book. We've been doing this with our own kids for years — and we'd love to host yours.
