# Lake Placid, Texas: The Locals' Guide to Seguin's Hidden Lake

May 27, 2026 9 min read

**Lake Placid** is a small, calm, spring-fed lake in **Seguin, Texas** — 45 minutes east of San Antonio, 30 minutes from New Braunfels, and barely on the map for most Hill Country visitors. That's exactly why locals love it.

No jet ski chaos. No Canyon Lake crowds. Dam-controlled water that stays flat all summer. And a single private island in the middle of it — the only place in Texas you can actually rent a cabana on an island. This is the locals' guide to Lake Placid, TX: what it is, why it's calmer, and how to spend a day on it.

## Where Is Lake Placid, Texas?

Lake Placid sits just south of downtown Seguin, formed by a dam on the Guadalupe River. From San Antonio it's a clean 45-minute drive east on I-10. From New Braunfels, about 25 minutes. From Austin, about an hour. Most people drive right past it on the highway without knowing it's there — which is precisely why it has stayed calm.

The lake is narrow and ribbon-shaped, hugged by cypress trees, a few private homes, and one notable piece of land in the middle: a small wooded island that [Son's Island](/about) has operated as a private day-trip resort for years.

## What Makes Lake Placid Different From Other Lakes Near San Antonio

Canyon Lake gets the headlines. Medina Lake gets the boats. Lake Placid gets the people who actually want to relax. Here's how it stacks up:

- **Dam-controlled.** Water levels stay consistent — no drought-emptied boat ramps.
- **Calm by design.** The lake is small and narrow. Wakeboarders and jet skis tend to go elsewhere.
- **Spring-fed temperature.** Cooler than the murky reservoir lakes in summer. Clearer too.
- **Cypress shoreline.** Old-growth cypress trees frame the water — it photographs like the Frio without the four-hour drive.
- **No public parking lots.** Access is intentionally limited, which keeps the crowds down.

## Things to Do on Lake Placid

### 1\. Kayaking

The number-one activity. Flat water, no current to fight, and you can paddle the length of the lake and back in under 90 minutes. First-timers love it. See our [complete beginner's kayaking guide](/blog/kayaking-near-san-antonio-guide) for what to wear and how to launch without flipping.

### 2\. Paddle Boarding

Lake Placid is genuinely one of the best SUP lakes in the region — glassy mornings, sunset reflections, and no boat wake to knock you off. More in our [underrated SUP spots](/blog/paddle-boarding-near-san-antonio-spots) roundup.

### 3\. Swimming

Spring-fed, clear, and refreshing. The sandy beach and swim platform at Son's Island are the easiest access points.

### 4\. Sunset Watching

The lake faces west-southwest. Sunsets from a cabana porch, a kayak, or a paddle board are the quiet highlight nobody warns you about.

### 5\. Picnics & BBQ

Each Son's Island cabana includes its own picnic table, BBQ grill, and shade. It's a real lake day, not a beach-chair-and-cooler situation.

## The Only Private Island on the Lake

Lake Placid has exactly one island in the middle of it, and it's [Son's Island](/book-now). You arrive by short pontoon shuttle, you get a private cabana with shade, BBQ, picnic table, and dock access, and you spend the day on the water without ever competing for a spot.

It's the only place in Texas where "I'm on an island in the middle of a Hill Country lake" is a literal statement, not a marketing line. Cabana details and live pricing are on the [cabanas page](/cabanas), and the layout (Island Cabanas A–C and Key Cabanas K) is on the [island map](/island-map).

## Best Time to Visit Lake Placid

**May through September** is peak lake-day season — warm enough to swim, long evenings, full operating hours. **Weekdays are noticeably quieter** than weekends; if you can swing a Tuesday or Wednesday, you'll often feel like the lake is yours. **October mornings** are the locals' secret — cool, glassy, foggy water, and almost nobody else out.

For overnight stays, [glamping cabins are open year-round](/glamping), and shoulder-season weekends (April, October) are some of the best photography conditions on the water.

## How to Get to Lake Placid, TX

- **From San Antonio:** ~45 min east on I-10 → Exit Seguin → follow signs to Son's Island.
- **From New Braunfels:** ~25 min east on I-10 or Hwy 46.
- **From Austin:** about an hour south on I-35 → I-10 east → Seguin.
- **From San Marcos:** ~25 min south.

Full driving directions and gate hours are on the [hours & directions page](/hours-directions).

## Where to Stay on Lake Placid

If you want overnight access to the lake itself, [Son's Island glamping](/glamping) is the answer — private cabins with lake views, fire pits, and morning paddle access before the day-trippers arrive. For a multi-property weekend, our sister sites on the Guadalupe and Cibolo are 15–30 minutes away — see [all Son's Island Getaways, LLC. properties](/other-properties).

## The Bottom Line

Lake Placid isn't trying to be Canyon Lake. It's smaller, calmer, prettier, and a third as crowded — and it has a private island in the middle of it that you can actually book. If your idea of a perfect Hill Country day is shade, spring-fed water, and a kayak under your own power, this is the lake. [Pick a date](/book-now) and we'll see you on the water.
