# 5 Underrated Paddle Boarding Spots Near San Antonio (2026)

May 7, 2026 9 min read

Most "**paddle boarding near San Antonio**" lists send you to the same three lakes. We've boarded all of them — and a dozen more. The five spots below are the ones we tell friends about, ranked by how calm the water is, how easy the launch is, and whether or not you'll have to share the lake with a wakeboat.

Spoiler: every spot on this list includes free paddle boards with a cabana rental. No rental fees, no roof rack, no hauling.

## 1\. The Lagoon at Son's Island — Lake Placid

The single best beginner SUP spot we know of within an hour of San Antonio. The lagoon at [Son's Island](/book-now) is the calm, sheltered side of the island where the water sits so still you can see the bottom. No current, no chop, no wakeboats. First-timers usually stand up within minutes. (More on the lake in our [Lake Placid, TX guide](/blog/lake-placid-texas-guide).)

### Why it's underrated:

Most visitors paddle the main lake side and miss the lagoon entirely. The lagoon is quieter, safer, and prettier — but you have to know to head there. Locals do.

## 2\. Sunrise Paddles at Sons Geronimo

The sunrise SUP at [Sons Geronimo](/book-now/geronimo) is a different kind of magic. Stay overnight in a cabin, walk to the private dock, and you've got the whole lake to yourself for the first hour of daylight.

### Why it's underrated:

People who book Geronimo for cabin rentals often don't realize the SUP access is included. The combination of "stay overnight + paddle at sunrise" is rare anywhere in Texas.

## 3\. Cibolo Creek Pools at Sons Rio Cibolo

Cibolo Creek isn't long enough for a serious SUP run, but the deep pools above the small waterfall at [Sons Rio Cibolo](/book-now/rio-cibolo) are scenic, shaded, and unique. Cypress trees overhead, limestone walls on the sides, clear water below. We've seen photo shoots happen here.

### Why it's underrated:

People come to Rio Cibolo for kayaking and the waterfall. SUP gets overlooked but is worth it for the photography and shade.

## 4\. The San Marcos River at Son's River Ranch

Genuine spring-fed river SUP at [Son's River Ranch](/book-now/river-ranch). The current is gentle enough that you can paddle upstream and float back, which is unusual for Texas rivers. The water stays cool even in August. Cypress shade most of the way.

### Why it's underrated:

The San Marcos is famous for tubing — most people don't realize SUP works perfectly on the slower stretches.

## 5\. The Guadalupe at Sons Guadalupe

SUP on the iconic Guadalupe is best done on calmer flow days. [Sons Guadalupe](/book-now/sons-guadalupe) has private river access and cabin rentals. This is a more advanced SUP than the others on this list, but a bucket-list paddle for Texans.

### Why it's underrated:

Most Guadalupe visitors tube. SUP on the Guadalupe at the right water levels is one of the most beautiful paddles in the state.

## What Makes a "Good" SUP Spot, Actually

Three things, in order:

1. **Calm water.** Wind and chop ruin SUP — especially for beginners.
2. **Easy launch.** A dock or sandy beach. Avoid steep banks.
3. **Shade nearby.** An hour on a board in direct sun is rough. Shade lets you rest between sessions.

All five spots above check all three boxes.

## Beginner Tips That Actually Work

- Start on your knees, then stand up after you've paddled a few strokes.
- Look at the horizon, not your feet.
- Keep feet hip-width apart, slightly behind the carry handle.
- Take short, smooth strokes on alternating sides.
- Wear a life jacket. Always. The water is deeper than it looks.

## What to Bring

- Swimsuit + rashguard
- Strap sandals or water shoes
- Hat with chin strap
- Sunglasses with retainer
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- Dry bag for phone/keys

Boards, paddles, life jackets — included.

## How to Make a Day of It

The best SUP days aren't just SUP days. Pair a morning paddle with a cabana lunch, an afternoon kayak (also free), and an evening swim. The [lake-day fun guide](/blog/lake-day-fun-near-san-antonio) covers the full playbook. Or stretch into a weekend with [glamping](/glamping-near-san-antonio).

## Where to Book

For pure SUP-first experiences, start with [Son's Island](/book-now). For cabin-stay-with-paddle, [Sons Geronimo](/book-now/geronimo). For creek scenery, [Sons Rio Cibolo](/book-now/rio-cibolo). For river paddling, [Son's River Ranch](/book-now/river-ranch).

## The Bottom Line

The most underrated _paddle boarding near San Antonio_ is the lagoon at Son's Island. The most photographic is Cibolo Creek. The most memorable is sunrise on Lake Placid. Pick the one that matches the day you want, and book a cabana — boards are already there.
