Paddle boarding on calm Lake Placid at Son's Island near San Antonio
    Paddling Guide

    Paddling at Son's Island

Lake Placid is the easiest, calmest place to paddle in the San Antonio area — spring-fed water, no current, no boat wakes, and unlimited kayak and paddle board use included with our day wristband.

    Water Conditions — Why It's Beginner-Friendly

Son's Island sits on Lake Placid, a calm, spring-fed stretch of the Guadalupe River near Seguin. Unlike the upper Guadalupe or Comal — where rapids, river traffic, and shuttle logistics get in the way — Lake Placid is flat, slow, and shaded. You can paddle out from the island in either direction, stop on a sandbar, swim, and paddle back without dealing with current.

That makes it the right pick for first-timers, kids, and anyone who'd rather float than navigate. It's also the right pick on hot afternoons — the water stays cool year-round.

    Equipment & What's Included

The all-day paddling wristband is $24.99 per person and includes unlimited use of our fleet for the day. You can swap between kayaks and paddle boards as much as you want.

    • Sit-on-top kayaks — single and tandem, stable and easy to re-board if you fall off
    • Stand-up paddle boards (SUPs) — 10' to 11' all-around boards, beginner-friendly width
    • Life jackets — included in adult and kid sizes
    • Paddles — adjustable for kayaks and SUPs

No reservation needed for gear — wristbands are added at check-in or during booking on the booking page.

How It Compares to Other San Antonio Paddling Spots

If you've looked at Mission Reach Paddling Trail, Mission Kayak, or upper Guadalupe outfitters, here's how Son's Island differs:

    • Mission Reach (San Antonio): Urban paddling along the San Antonio River — scenic, but you're paddling under highway bridges with city noise. No private cabana, no swimming.
    • Upper Guadalupe / Comal: River paddling with current and rapids — requires a shuttle, gear strapping, and more skill. Better for experienced paddlers, harder with small kids.
    • Son's Island (Lake Placid): Calm spring-fed lake water, no current, no shuttle. Your private cabana is your base — paddle out, swim, BBQ, paddle again.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Are kayaks and paddle boards included with a cabana?

Kayaks and paddle boards are an add-on — the all-day wristband is $24.99 per person and includes unlimited use of the fleet for the day.

Is the water calm enough for beginners?

Yes. Lake Placid is a spring-fed, flat-water stretch with no rapids and minimal current. It's one of the easiest places to learn in Central Texas.

Do I need to bring my own paddle board?

No. We supply kayaks, SUPs, paddles, and life jackets. You're welcome to BYO if you prefer your own gear.

    Can kids paddle here?

Yes. Kid-size life jackets are provided. Tandem kayaks are popular with parents and younger kids.

Do I have to book paddling separately?

No — you can add the all-day wristband during cabana booking, or pick it up at check-in.

How does this compare to Mission Kayak or Mission Reach?

Mission Reach is urban river paddling through downtown San Antonio. Son's Island is a calm, private lake setting with your own cabana to return to between paddles.
