New Braunfels has so much going on that locals develop a weird blind spot — you spend summers dodging visitors on the Comal and forget that 20–30 minutes in almost any direction puts you somewhere completely different. 20–25 Minutes East: Son's River Ranch & Lake Placid
The closest "feels like vacation" spot most NB locals haven't tried: drive Highway 46 east toward Seguin and you hit Lake Placid in 25 minutes. Son's River Ranch sits on the Guadalupe just outside Seguin — same river you know from Gruene, but a stretch most NB residents have never floated. Son's Island is a few miles further on Lake Placid: book a private cabana, walk a footbridge, no parking-lot tube line.

30 Minutes North on 281: Sons Rio Cibolo & Bulverde
The Marion / Bulverde corridor is the under-the-radar direction for NB locals. Sons Rio Cibolo in Marion is a cypress-shaded creek with a waterfall pool — about 30 minutes from NB via FM 78. Bulverde itself has Tetzlaff Park (free disc golf), Specht's Texas Restaurant (the brisket-and-live-music local pick), and access to the 281 corridor for further trips.
45 Minutes Out: Luckenbach, Gonzales & Lockhart
The "I want to be gone all day but home for dinner" radius. Lockhart for BBQ (Black's, Kreuz, Smitty's, Terry Black's — pick two, don't be a hero), Gonzales for the Texas-history nerds, Luckenbach for the Sunday-afternoon-music tradition that's worth doing at least once a season.
- Lockhart BBQ trail — 45 min via Hwy 80. Eat at 11:30 to beat the line.
- Gonzales — 'Come and Take It' cannon, square, Independence Park. ~50 min.
